The Silent Spiral of Seasonal Sadness: A Survivor’s Truth Beyond the Cold
It's that time of year again, Fall! During this season, many find joy in various activities, such as wearing their favorite hoodie and enjoying a pumpkin-flavored drink, or playing in the fallen leaves and hosting gatherings to celebrate with friends and family. Fall is also one of my favorite times of year, next to Spring! Unfortunately, under all the fall festivities lies a darker and not so talked about mental health disorder called Seasonal depression, commonly known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I found a very informative article about it on American Family Physician (AFP) that states, "about 5 percent of the U.S. population experiences seasonal affective disorder, with symptoms present for about 40 percent of the year."
It goes on to explain that because of the occurrence and duration of SAD, it is actually diagnosed as a severe mental disorder right alongside other major depressive disorders, such as bipolar I, II, and other serious depression disorders. As stated in this article from the American Psychiatry Association, the condition occurs more frequently in women and young individuals aged 18-30. However, it can also significantly impact those living in areas with less sunlight during winter.
Many people can be affected during seasonal changes, particularly in winter. When daylight shortens and temperatures plummet, feelings of sadness and lethargy may emerge. This can lead to a sense of hopelessness that, if ignored, impacts daily life significantly! Identifying symptoms and seeking solutions early or as they begin to appear enables individuals to take charge of their mental well-being!
Symptoms of Seasonal Depression
While seasonal depression can manifest in various ways, some common signs include:
Persistent sadness or hopelessness: This may feel more intense during the winter months.
Loss of interest: Activities that once brought joy may suddenly become unappealing.
Appetite changes: People may crave carbohydrates or experience weight fluctuations.
Difficulty concentrating: Tasks that require focus may seem overwhelming.
Fatigue: A lack of energy can make daily activities feel like a chore.
Sleep disturbances: This can range from insomnia to excessive sleeping.
Promptly recognizing these symptoms is crucial for managing seasonal depression effectively!
The Impact of Seasonal Depression
If seasonal depression goes unaddressed, it can profoundly affect all aspects of life. Personal relationships, work performance, and overall quality of life can suffer! A study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders in 1999 found that individuals with seasonal depression report significant life impairments, making it essential to take action. Withdrawal from social activities often leads to isolation, further worsening depressive symptoms. It’s a cycle that can be challenging to break without mindful intervention!
Now that you are aware of the medical implications of this depression disorder, the REAL question here is, how do you deal with it as a Survivor or being a super sensitive soul like an Empath? Through my own journey of spiritual awakening—and in holding space for others on their path—I’ve witnessed a powerful truth: many of us, myself included, are naturally drawn to holistic healing. It’s not just a preference; it’s a soul-led calling to restore balance through mind, body, and spirit. Many aim to detox from the heavy medications and chemicals they have previously used, seeking alternatives that don't involve taking a pill for a solution.
One of the most disorienting experiences for a spiritually awakened soul is trying to discern the difference between Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), clinical depression disorders, and full-blown spiritual warfare. It can feel like a psychic storm—where emotional heaviness, energetic attacks, and old trauma all collide!
✨The first truth to anchor into: depression often arises from unhealed fragments of your psyche—wounds left behind from childhood trauma or unresolved pain that’s still echoing through your energetic field. When the seasons shift, those shadows can resurface louder than ever before, begging to be seen, felt, and finally transmuted!
✨The second truth to anchor into: you are not alone—and you are not broken, strange, or “too much” because unhealed trauma still rises to the surface. That’s how healing works. It’s layered, cyclical, and often sneaky. Those emotional echoes from the past aren’t signs of weakness—they’re invitations to reclaim your power, piece by piece! You are a spiritual being having a human experience, and this is part of your healing journey as a lightworker!
This isn’t just about what you’ve endured in this lifetime—it’s the echo of centuries of emotional suppression, of voices silenced and truths dismissed. If you’re walking a healing path now, it’s because your Soul chose this incarnation to break the cycle. You’re here to transmute karmic wounds from past lives, to reclaim the parts of you that were never heard, never validated, and finally bring them into the light!
Holistic Coping Strategies for SAD Symptoms
Fortunately, there are many effective strategies for managing seasonal depression. Here are some holistic interventions you can use to reduce or eliminate SAD from your energetic field!
Remember, your journey toward spiritual enlightenment is uniquely yours. There’s no universal map for spiritual healing—only the compass of your intuition. What nourishes you today might whisper for change tomorrow! This is because healing isn’t linear, and your soul’s medicine may shift with each healed karmic lesson and season of growth. Healing is a living process—sometimes the tools that once brought clarity or comfort may begin to feel stagnant, and that’s okay. Trust your intuition when it nudges you to shift, recalibrate, or explore new methods. Your spirit always knows the way, tune into and most importantly ...
TRUST THE PROCESS!
😇 SOUL-LED AFFIRMATIONS FOR (SAD) HEALING
Before we dive into these hand-dandy tools, let’s honor the power of your words first! Affirmations aren’t just phrases—they’re energetic codes. When spoken with intention, they rewire your nervous system, shift your vibration, and call your soul back into alignment! For those navigating the murky waters of seasonal depression or other serious mental health disorders, affirmations become sacred anchors—reminders that healing is possible, and your truth is worthy of being heard!
Speak these truths aloud. Let them echo through your energy field.
Let them help rewrite the story UR trauma once previously told!
• “I honor my emotions as sacred messengers. I no longer fear their arrival.”
• “I am safe to feel, safe to heal, and safe to rise.”
• “Even in the darkest season, my light is never lost.”
• “I release what no longer serves me and welcome peace into my body.”
• “My healing is valid, my timing is divine, and my path is my own.”
• “I am not broken—I am becoming.”
• “I trust the wisdom of my soul to guide me through every shadow.”
• “I am worthy of joy, even when it feels far away.”
🌞 LIGHT-BASED HEALING
One widely recommended treatment is light therapy. Sitting in front of a special light box that mimics natural sunlight can significantly improve mood. Research shows that individuals who use light therapy daily for 30 minutes experience a 60% reduction in symptoms. This includes:
Sun Rituals: Step outside for 10–30 minutes of natural light, even on cloudy days.
Candle Meditation: Use flame gazing as a grounding practice during darker evenings.
Light Therapy Lamps: Use daily in the morning to regulate circadian rhythm and boost serotonin.
🧠 MIND-BODY-SPIRIT PRACTICES
Journaling with Intention: Track emotional patterns and spiritual downloads.
Breathwork & EFT Tapping: Release anxiety and rewire your emotional responses.
Sound Healing Frequency Music: Use binaural beats or 432Hz tones to soothe and calm the nervous system.
Moon Mapping: Align your healing journey with lunar cycles for deeper integration.
Crystal Companions: Use citrine, sunstone, or amethyst for seasonal balance.
Meditation and Spirit Rituals: Call in divine support during moments of emotional distress
🌿 HERBAL ALLIES FOR EMOTIONAL & ENERGETIC SUPPORT
Nature offers gentle yet powerful allies to help soothe the nervous system, balance mood, and support your spiritual healing journey. These herbs can be used in teas, tinctures, or rituals—always with intention and energetic respect.
Adaptogenic Herbal Teas: Support adrenal health and emotional resilience. Try blends with ashwagandha, holy basil (tulsi), or rhodiola.
Echinacea: Boosts immunity and helps clear energetic stagnation during seasonal transitions.
St. John’s Wort: Traditionally used to support mild depression and uplift mood.
Saffron: A potent mood enhancer with ancient roots in emotional healing.
Ginkgo Biloba: Supports mental clarity and circulation—especially helpful when brain fog sets in.
Chamomile Tea: Calms the nervous system and invites emotional softness.
Lemon Balm: Soothes anxiety and promotes restful sleep, often used in lunar rituals.
Mood-Boosting Foods: Omega-3s (salmon, walnuts), Vitamin D (eggs, mushrooms), complex carbs (quinoa, oats).
Avoid Sugar & Caffeine Spikes: These can worsen mood swings and fatigue.
🫂 COMMUNITY & SUPPORT
Therapy or Coaching: Trauma-informed guidance can help reframe seasonal triggers.
Sacred Circles or Online Communities: Share your truth and receive validation by others who have walked down a similar path of trauma
Boundaries & Rest: Honor your energetic limits and enforce energetic boundaries during holiday stressors! (Aunt Hilda and her questions will just have to wait!)

A cozy winter retreat: soft lighting, a roaring fireplace, and plush seating create the perfect ambiance for relaxation and warmth.
🌟The Importance of Awareness
Raising awareness about seasonal depression is more than education—it’s soul work! Awareness of seasonal depression’s signs and symptoms allows loved ones to respond with empathy, not judgment—and that shift can be profoundly healing! When we name what’s happening, we soften the shame around it. When we speak openly about mental health, we create a sacred space for healing! Your voice matters. Your story matters. And every conversation you spark could be the light someone else needs to find their way through the dark!
Finding Your Holistic Path to Wellness
Healing from seasonal depression requires more than surface-level solutions—it asks us to tend to the deeper layers of our being. The mind, body, and spirit are intimately connected, and when one is out of balance, the others feel it too. That’s why holistic healing must be intentional, intuitive, and energetically aligned. Healing is not a solo mission—it’s a soul collaboration. Build a sacred network of helpers, guides, and professionals who support your journey. Teamwork truly is dreamwork, especially when it comes to navigating the layers of trauma and transformation.
It’s perfectly aligned to blend traditional healing methods with holistic ones. Your path is unique, and your healing tools should be too! If you’re ever unsure about a specific practice or modality, checking in with a trusted professional is not only wise—it’s empowering!
